Rich Pastorella’s Martial Arts Lineage

Martial arts are traditionally passed from teacher to student over many generations. This unbroken chain of instruction is known as a lineage. More than a family tree of teachers, a lineage represents the careful passing of knowledge, experience, history, and philosophy from one generation to the next. It helps to preserve the integrity of the art while honoring those who dedicated their lives to developing it.

In this video, Rich Pastorella explains the lineage of his Yang Style Tai Chi training, tracing it from the 19th-century founder, Yang Lu Chan, through the teachers who preserved this tradition and ultimately passed it on to him. Understanding this history offers you a deeper appreciation for Tai Chi and the remarkable individuals who devoted themselves to protecting its principles over time.

Today, Yang Style Tai Chi is practiced by people around the world for many different reasons. Some are interested in its martial arts heritage. Others are looking for a gentle way to improve their health or regain their balance. Rich believes that both paths are intertwined because they grow from the same tradition and share the same foundation.

For Rich, lineage represents more than history. It represents a responsibility. The knowledge he received was entrusted to him by his own teachers, and he believes it should be taught on with the same care and respect that was shown to him. His goal is not simply to preserve ancient traditions, but to also help people discover how that traditions can improve their health and their lives today.
