Before we can begin effective training of any kind especially effective martial arts training we need to develop a proper Teacher/Student relationship. This relationship has to begin with a full understanding of what it takes to be successful in this endeavor. Please understand that whether your goals are completely health oriented, performance enhancement, sports enhancement, life and death self-defense or the most likely goal, robust health at every age, you will need to follow the same basic rules and have the same basic understanding of what is necessary to be effective. In this opening section of my 3 year black belt program I intend to explore this in detail so that you can make a fully informed decision if this program is for you.
What Will It Take?
First and foremost I have never seen anyone fully comply with a Tai Chi program and not receive tremendous benefit. Second and almost as importantly, I can’t think of anyone, medical limitations aside that can’t achieve the black belt or participate in this program. This was I else’s method is certainly not limited to the physically gifted or elite athletes. But that all being said, it would be a misrepresentation to fail to tell you that this requires time and effort tTo accomplish. Martial arts, if we are going to be truthful, is not something that is accomplished in one day, one week, one month or even one year. Martial arts is accomplished over time. In fact, the dictionary definition for Kung Fu (Tai-Chi is a type of Kung-Fu) is time and effort.
It would also be neglecting my responsibility to fail to explain that even though Tai Chi takes time and effort to accomplish, conversely not having some way of enhancing your movement health will cost you much more in time and effort. How much time does it take to be in chronic pain? How much more time does it take to drag around all the time because you are tired or weak? What does it cost to not have the physical vitality to be able to recreate with your family or enjoy family vacations or perform intimately with your partner etc…? These things all cost time and effort. And it costs you money to not be able to perform at your job or business and it can cost you your life if a self-defense situation occurs and you don’t have the strength or attention to perform in that moment.
Tai Chi, if you are willing to fully participate can help with all of this and more!
